Stationhead

Global social streaming app transforming the traditional radio model

I was the sole product designer working with the VP of Engineering focusing on providing more intimate ways for Artists to connect with Fans.

I designed stations, channels, activity feeds, leaderboards, monetization solutions and sharing features.

How can we help Listeners find a station they’ll love, quickly?

Content is king. Content can also cause decision paralysis. Content feeds can become white noise.

At Stationhead, Listeners have a Home that is customized to what they want to hear based on actions they’ve taken in the app. This includes stations or channels they follow, social and related recommendations and real-time trending live and recorded shows.

New Listeners to the platform aren’t dumped on an empty search page or subjected to a content fire hose. They can preview trending live and recorded shows and a curated feed of stations and channels.

How can we minimize set-up time and maximize success for Hosts?

“When should I go live?” That’s the number one comment from our Hosts. Number two? “How do I get the word out?”

After stripping away a bit of feature bloat from the show schedule flow we were left with date, time and description. We added the conditional display of a channel’s scheduled shows when we detect a station that is likely to be syndicated to that channel. This helps Hosts choose an optimal time slot for their show.

We added auto-generated artwork, optimized for socials, and the ability to add audio promos to give Listeners a sneak peek of what they can expect from a Hosts show.

How can we leverage metadata and Listener actions to improve discovery?

We discovered Listeners wanted to stay and listen to more content but wanted Stationhead to meet them where they were at, typically on a station with a freshly-ended show.

Channels can be discovered in a Listener’s Home feed and via an auto-play setting when a show ends. The Listener is alerted they’re joining the channel. The channel is selected based on the station they’re on.

Once in the channel, the chat seamlessly continues and Listeners are treated to live and recorded shows and curated playlists. Channels are ‘always on’ and can accommodate relevant breaking events and trending shows to shake up the schedule and ensure the best content is streaming.
